Augsburg Mainstation

Together with DB Station&Service AG, the city of Augsburg has been planning and building the Augsburg mobility hub since 2007. Key components of the project are the new construction of tram lines 6 and 5 and the extensive remodelling of the main railway station. The aim is to make local transport and the main railway station more modern and attractive.
The station structure consists of an underground distribution level, a tram stop underneath and a connection through an approx. 405 metre long tram and pedestrian tunnel.
In accordance with the requirements of the transport company, the lighting design is intended to support intuitive orientation. In particular, surface luminance and colour temperatures of the light are used for this purpose. In the tram stop, located two storeys below the surface, the platforms and waiting areas are illuminated with warm white light colours and point light sources. They provide brilliance and plasticity. Blue backlit glass panelling on the walls creates a bright room atmosphere and provides a perceived connection to the daylight above. The colour temperatures are subtly graduated upwards through the distribution level to the daylight.
The large staircase portals on the distribution level are brightened by the incident daylight and by artificial grazing light at night, making them easy to read.
